Axe Grooves around waterholes |
At the moment, this is a very difficult, but not impossible, site to navigate to. Contrary to the popular view that the December-January Bushfires of 2019/2020 might have cleared the way for an easy walk, it is a very dangerous walk, even assisted by multiple GPS devices and maps. Some hazards include falling burnt trees, lack of trail markers, cliff ledges and unmarked cliff climbs. This site can be reached via a highly strenuous 4 or so hours walk from Wisemans Ferry Road. The return trip at the moment is around 2 hours 45 minutes. This is not a place to navigate or go alone!

Emu group |
There are at least 80 engravings at the main Flat Rocks Ridge Site (Group 6). This site features a large group of emus, men and shields, Baiame and some other ancestral beings from the dreamtime. Of particular interest is the presence of the Rainbow Serpent figure. This particular engraving is rare in the Sydney-Hawkesbury District and is present at Maroota (Dharug Country), Mangrove Mountain (suggested by some as Darkingjung Country), Somersby (suggested as some as Darkinjung Country) and in a very dangerous and difficult to reach location near Jerusalem Bay (Guringai Country).

All of the shields here are the same design. |
