Yep ...we are all still patiently waiting for the day when the people from world's oldest continuing culture, holding the same legal rights as a rock on a track before 1967, the traditional owners of this land, are at least acknowledged in the Constitution of Australia as part of the development of a treaty and edge closer to true reconciliation.

Yep - we are all still waiting ....

Unusual Symbol Engraving, Strickland State Forest

View of engraving site

Unusual Engraving near others

This rock platform is difficult to reach yet only 20 minutes walk downhill from the wetern side of Mangrove Rd, Narara. This is in the general location of of an engraving of a man pictured in a "running profile" with one leg crossing his body, and another site that depicts a feint wallaby. This place is about 150 metres west of the known Black Cockatoo nesting places. This unusual symbol was under 35-40 mm of mud and about 1.5 metres from the fallen tree.

Feint Wallaby Engraving - Strickland State Forest

Feint Wallaby Engraving

This feint wallaby engraving is located on a rock platform about a very rough 20 minute walk on the western side of Mangrove Road, Narara. The shape of the head and chest are recognisable. This may be a very young engraving and perhaps unfinished.

Spear Sharpening Place - Strickland State Forest

Spear Sharpening Place

Whilst there are many engraving and axe sharpening sites within and around Strickland State Forest, there are some spear sharpening places. This site is only a 15 minute walk west of Mangrove Road, Narara. Sites such as this one are sometimes confused as representing "unusual bird tracks".

Stingray or Sea Creature, Strickland State Forest, Narara

This engraving is barely visible except for the eye detail and feint outline of the engraving witnessed late in the afternoon on a sunny afternoon. This engraving appears as a very old and weathered stingray which is extremely rare in this area that has sometimes been claimed as Darkingjung territory. As such, an engraving of a stingray is significant as sea creatures were not engraved in accepted Darkinjung Territory. There is a substantial PH D Thesis (ANU) that validates the frequency of particular engravings within traditional territorial boundaries.

Very Small 3 toed Mundoe, Strickland State Forest, Narara

Rare 3 toed mundoe situated on a small rock platform

This engraving site is located west of Mangrove Road, Narara in Strickland State Forest. This is the smallest 3 toed mundoe I have seen and appears to be legitimate despite nearby carved graffiti. It appears pitted which is unusual. This type of mundoe ordinarily points toward the next sacred site which maybe the site that is partially destroyed by the Energy Australia access trail on the east side of Mangrove Road. This type of engraving is normally found in pairs in this area.

Large Engraving - Emu Body, shield or large mundoe, Strickland State Forest, Narara

This engraving site is unusual - the figure engraved appears similar to the controversial emu engraved off Bambara Rd Kariong and also has a similar form to a small shield or large mundoe.

Boomerang, Club or Mundoe, Strickland State Forest, Narara

This engraving site is located on a small rock a fair distance from the main Strickland State Forest engraving site. It appears as a V shaped engraving which is not that all unusual but could be perhaps be a small boomerang, club or mundoe.

Shield, Strickland State Forest, Narara

Large Weathered Shield engraving

This engraving site is located west of Mangrove Rd, Narara in Strickland State Forest. The engraving is barely visible except when viewed in the right conditions. It is a large shield about 2 1/2 - 3 feet in length and is located a long way from the main Strickland State Forest engraving site.

Deeply Engraved Lines, Strickland State Forest, Narara

Deeply Engraved Grooves

This set of deeply engraved lines is unusual for this area. It is probably not likely that they are of aboriginal origin but may be. These are located on a small rock large west of Mangrove Rd Narara in Strickland State Forest.
