This stone arrangement marks the route to several Cave Art Sites in this area. This site is located south of the Rocla Quarry.

This stone arrangement is one of several in this area. This particular site is purportedly linked to the sacred woman site about 85 metres away. I would support the opinion of the Rocla Archeologist that is not likely.

This site was not acknowledged in the archeological report re: the Rocla Quarry expansion. This site is not hard to miss and may not have been recorded before. This site is located south of the Rocla Quarry.

This Cave Art site is difficult to reach in deep bushland south of the Rocla Quarry. It is probably best not visited. The art consists of ochre and charcoal markings/drawings.

Sacred Woman, Calga

Very Sacred Woman

This engraving site is in danger of being destroyed through the expansion of the Rocla Quarry Site that was partially approved by the NSW State Government. This engraving site would be among my present Top 10 in the Sydney Hawkesbury District. Very difficult to find in deep bush south of the quarry are several figures that were recorded incorrectly by archeologists. This site is deeply sacred with the figure of a woman with arm and leg bands represented. The detail of the figure in regard to her sexual organs is not represented in this particular way in many other engravings of sacred women. Accompanying the sacred woman is Daramulan, in the guise of a giant Koala. Daramulan is represented exactly in the same form in a sacred site at Muogamarra close to another "sexual site". The Daramulan at this site is lsightly larger than the Muogamarra engraving and is missing it's head through erosion. This confirms for me that this is Guringai Country - not Darkingjung.

Baby Emu or Fish, Peats Ridge Rd, Calga

This engraving platform is clearly noticeable as one of the first road cuttings on Peats Ridge Road, Calga when travelling north from the F3. Barely visible the engraving appears as a baby emu or a fish. Must have been a significant rock ledge and engraving site prior to the road building as, unfortunately, is the custom is this area. Sadly this located on a significant aboriginal trade route that extends from the Newcastle area into the Gurringai lands.

Mundoe Platform, Peats Ridge Rd, Calga

This engraving site was once joined to the platform to the west that Peats Ridge Road was cut at one stage. Covered in heavy loads of Casuarina Needles there are some significant circle engravings present as well.

Snake or Eel, Peats Ridge Road, Calga

Looks more like a Tiger Snake

This engraving site is not far from the entrance to the Calga Sand Quarry and is visible from the roadway. There are no other engravings on the rock. Appearance is similar to the Death Adder in Somersby Industrial Area but also looks similar to a narrow banded-eel ... more likely a tiger snake - very rare ! Within 100 metres of the entrance to the quarry.

Stone Arrangement & Engraving Site, Calga

This stone arrangement is not hard to find on the large rock platform near the south-western boundary of the Rocla Quarry at Calga NSW. It marks a significant space in this area and is central to the community protest action in regard to the expansion of the Rocla Quarry. This arrangement is close to an engraving of a woman, emu and a significant hand - linked in the Darkingjung tradition as a sacred women-only site. I am not sure if the Guringai tradition would suggest otherwise nevertheless the Rocla expansion should be prevented - last chance to preserve sacred land.

Interstingly there are several engraving sites close by not documented or acknowledged in the Aboriginal Heritage Assessment that was commissioned by Rocla in 2009. One is totally destroyed through leeching from the quarry is only about 150 metres NWW where a boundary fence has been moved east of the engraving site at some stage. Maybe there is a problem with the conversion or loss of data from historical records to the AHMIS database.

This engraving was recorded by WD Campbell in 1899. It is within 2 metres of the Calga Rocla Quarry and has been damaged by leaking effluent from the quarry. It was described as a 15 inch mammal. It seems as though the quarry boundary fence has been moved at Some stage. The engraving seems to have been in the boundary at some point in time.

Emu, Walkabout Park, Calga

Walkabout Park at Calga has several engraving sites within it including one referred to as "Daramulan". This particular site has a small regular emu engraved on a largish rock surface. There is also an engraving of a man nearby. There are other engraving sites in the nearby bushland, outside the park, heading towards the quarry.
