Wallaby Engraving, Woy Woy Road, Kariong

This engraving site is quite difficult to reach and is located to the eastern side of Woy Woy Road, north of Staples Lookout. There is a wallaby engraving, some other identifiable engravings and several stone arrangements.

Animal Tracks engraving, Woy Woy Road, Kariong

Animal Tracks

This difficult to reach site is within 300 metres of the road between Kariong and Woy Woy. Located on a series of three large rock platforms, there are a number of small rock arrangements and a small number of engravings - most are almost indistinguishable. There is no track into this site.

Fish, Woy Woy Road, Kariong

A series of small engraving platforms located off the western side of Woy Woy Road, contain engravings that are partially covered in dirt and leaf material. This engraving appears to be a fish, continuing the theme in this location of a connection to marine/aquatic beings,

Large Eel (non-banded) engraving, Woy Woy Road, Kariong

This large non-banded eel engraving is located on a series of scattered platforms that flank an old creek line that used to transverse the Woy Woy to Kariong Road and perhaps links one secluded sacred site to another. 

Small Emu, Woy Woy Road, Kariong

There is a small emu-shaped engraving on the side of a large rock that may have been previously recorded as Daramulan located about 130 metres west of Woy Woy Rd, Kariong. There are no bush tracks in or out of this site.

Stingray and small eel, Woy Woy Road, Kariong

This interesting set of engravings are difficult to reach. These are located about 120 metres west of Woy Woy Road. Several engravings overlap each other. Pictured is a small snake - perhaps a Death Adder and a stingray. Death Adder engravings are reasonably rare to find.

Large arrow-headed eel, Woy Woy Road, Kariong.

This very large arrow-headed eel is located about 100 metres west of Woy Woy Road, north of the Scout Camp Road. There are no bush tracks in or out of this location. The head of the eel is impressive at around 2ft long with the body perhaps 4 or 5 metres long. There are a range of engravings scattered throughout this area that are difficult to reach.

Large Crescent Shaped Engraving, Old Gosford Quarry Site, Bulls Hill

This large crescent-shaped engraving is one of a number of engravings located on a large rock platform on the western side of Bulls Hill Quarry. This engraving partially resembles a boomerang, sword club or part of an echidna. Located on this same rock platform is an old camp fire and plenty of broken beer bottles - a ceremony of sorts!

In addition there is a series of engravings that combine naturally occurring water run-off grooves with indigenous engraved lines. Whilst not a common occurrence in this area there are some sites that have also been created in this way. An example of this technique is the 60 foot Whale recorded by W.D.Campbell (1899) that is located approximately 600 metres west of this site.

Mother and Baby Emu, Kariong

This site includes a Mother and Baby emu that are located in the centre of a fire trail off Woy Woy Road in Kariong. It is a wonder that they still exist.

Seven Shields Site, Woy Woy

7 Shields - Woy Woy

The seven shields site is a very important and sacred site in Brisbane Water National Park. Not far from the Woy Woy Rabbits site this site points toward another ceremonial site where there are lots of stone circles and some very old weathered engravings. This site, for some reason, seems to have been missed in the documentation and analysis of shield site data within the context of an ANU PhD thesis - incredible!

Sacred Site - Kariong

This site contains many, many engravings and is perhaps one of the most sacred sites in this area of the Central Coast. It may well be the Muogamara of Brisbane Water National Park. Not all that difficult to reach the sites contains processions of men and many overlapping figures all within a relatively small space. This site is pretty much aligned to a whale site and Bulgandary in an East-West line.

This particular site may have been previously associated with an Aboriginal Reserve. An old sign marker post is just visible from the roadway. A short 30 metre walk through dense spikey hakea leads to the main whale that is still in good condition. There are fish engravings nearby and a wallaby. This site is about 5 minutes walk from Bulgandry and another 10 minute walk from a serious sacred site nearby. Access is via the eastern side of Woy Wy Rd in line with the northern Bulgandry Fire Trail.

RFS Command Centre, Woy Woy Road, Kariong

Main Emu

This engraving site once had many significant engravings on it. Most have been lost through erosion. Some can be located after rain if you know what you are looking for. There are some wallabies, group of Emus (common in this area) and Daramulan. This site is adjacent to the RFS Command Centre at Kariong on Woy Woy Road. The site is a large flat rock surface that has several groups of stone piles on it. I hope it is never used as a helicopter landing area.

Kangaroo

The kangaroo is part of a series of engravings that are present on a small rock platform near the intersection of the Kariong Rifle Range Road and Woy Woy Rd. The main figure is located next to the large electrical transmission pole. There are several engraving sites nearby.

Man

A significant group of engravings including several men, Koradji and eels are scattered over several rock platforms in a challenging area to reach opposite the Kariong Rifle Range Track.

Rare Engraving, Woy Woy Road, Woy Woy

Rare Engraving - missed by WD Campbell (1899) and Mc Carthy (1983)

This rare engraving appears as a Kangaroo initially but is quite different. This site is located within very dense hakea scrub that has small patches of rock that are barely accessible. Without the precise location, rain and correct sunlight it is highly likely that you would miss this one as WD Campbell (1899) and Mc Carthy (1983) did. It is in the vicinity of the larger Woy Woy 'Rabbits site" heading SSW.

This small site leads to the larger Woy Woy Site and onto to others in the area. Not documented by WD Campbell or others is a remarkable pitted engraving nearby that is hidden by Spiky Hakea, only visible after rain and in the afternoon. This figure is fast disappearing.

Large Fish or whale

This site accessed via a track in the Staples Lookout area is actually part of a series of sites that some connected. A range of engravings are present including men, eels, shield, kangaroos and "rabbits". This site has been documented by many authors. There are still some engravings nearby that are perhaps more impressive.
