Yep ...we are all still patiently waiting for the day when the people from world's oldest continuing culture, holding the same legal rights as a rock on a track before 1967, the traditional owners of this land, are at least acknowledged in the Constitution of Australia as part of the development of a treaty and edge closer to true reconciliation.

Yep - we are all still waiting ....

Lyrebird Site, Terrey Hills, Garigal National Park

Large Kangaroo

Detail of platform

Main Engraving Platform
This site is known as the Lyrebird Site. The Lyrebird engraving was not clearly visible at this time. This site is not easily reached and possibly quite dangerous to attempt outside of winter. The last attempt was aborted due to a Tiger Snake in a tree about 1.5 metres above the ground.

To access the site you will need to reach the main Terrey Hills Hunting Engraving Site west of Larool Road, follow the creek downstream and cross it, head west and then follow the large rock cliff formation line to the north west before engaging in a short but demanding hill climb to continue north across patches of hanging swamp and several scattered rock platforms.

Group of Macropods & other figures, Killarney Heights

Main Engraving Platform with a view to Killarney Point

Kangaroo / Wallaby #1

Large Kangaroo within the group of macropod engravings

Additional Wallaby

Additional engraving on the west side of the platform - perhaps another wallaby.

This group of macropod engravings is rare in this part of Garigal National Park and perhaps across the larger part of the Sydney Basin & Central Coast. There is a group of 5 Kangaroos east of the Wakehurst Parkway and south of the old and historic Oxford Falls Public School. This group seems significant in that it appears as a combination of Kangaroos and Wallabies or perhaps a Kangaroo and Joeys. The next closest group of Kangaroos beyond this site is at Oxford Falls, then Mount Colah and beyond that, at Moonee Moonee Aboriginal Reserve in Somersby, south west of the Old Sydney Town site.

This engraving platform has a great view towards Killarney Point and is about 3 or 4 metres above the junction of the bush trail that runs between Roseville Bridge to Flat Rock and the trail that runs directly south of Downpatrick Road, Killarney Heights. This site was covered in leaves at the time of location.

Shield, Forestway, Belrose

Large but very weathered Shield
This old weathered shield is located on a platform among a series of other small rock platforms containing engravings threatened with destruction through the construction and proposed future widening  of the road to Terrey Hills from Frenchs Forest. This site is located  about 120 metres south of the Electrical Sub-Station

Kangaroo and Mundoe, Centre Track

Kangaroo mid trail near 5 toed mundoe
This Kangaroo engraving is located in the middle of the trail, 20 minutes from the start of the Terrey Hills end of the Centre Track. This Kangaroo shows signs of "being improved" well after the original engraving event. Supporting this particular engravings authenticity is a 5 toed mundoe located less than a metre away. The mundoe points toward the same location as the mundoe trail at the end of the track - another sacred site across the valley.

Chevron Engraving, Garigal National Park

Chevron Engraving
This large Chevron Engraving is similar to others found in Guringai Territory. This unusual engraving is located in deep bush about 200 metres from the end of the Manly Warringah Radio Control Airfield.

Whale or Shark Site, Garigal National Park

Large Whale or Shark

This large engraving of a whale or shark is approximately12 ft in length. It is similar to others found in several locations in  Kariong including one of a a dolphin. The engraving seems to have something in it's mouth. This is a fairly isolated engraving with few others to be found on an extremely large rockshelf north east of the Manly Warringah Amateur Radio Club. Interestingly there appears to be an engraving of a bull roarer close by. The site in in direct line of site with at least two other sacred sites across the valley(s) - one below the Bahai Temple and the other in Elanora Heights.

Kimbriki Tip Area, Kimbriki Road, Terrey Hills

Old Weathered Kangaroo Engraving
What appears as an old weathered kangaroo engraving is located on an isolated rock platform featuring a rock pool and stone arrangement that is accessible of a fire trail in Kimbriki Road , Terrey Hills. There may be other engravings nearby. Follow the fire trail until it ends and head south east toward a platform that consist of two paralell rocks. The kangaroo, barely visible without water, and follows the contour of the platform of the RHS platform.

Bluff Track, Bantry Bay, Garigal National Park.

Large Whale , Koradji, Shark Bone Rattle, Boomerang and Shield
This site is one of the most significant on the Northern Beaches with a large whale, koradji, shark bane rattle, boomerang and shield present. It is significant as the koradji possesses a shark bone rattle that is rattled underwater to entice whales to beach themselves. The site is within the line of site of another nearby site that is located at the end of Bantry Bay Road where Baiame is present.

I viewed the site around 20 years ago and it was weathered but most figures were able to be discerned. I am afraid that this significant site, not sign-posted, will be unrecognisable within the next 5 years or so - very sad! Another significant site that will be lost forever.  There are two Cave Art Sites in the area. The site is located along the Bantry Bay Bluff Track - a short distance from the intersection of the Natural Bridge Track. Head east from the marked tree on the LHS.

Echidna and Shield Group, Mona Vale Road, Ingelside

Main Echidna
This is truly a magnificent site that has been protected from destruction in the early construction of Mona Vale Road. It is likely that this engraving site extended across Mona Vale Road. This site was recorded originally by I.M.Sim. Recorded at that time was a pair of echidnas, several weathered and oval-shaped mundoes and a snake with at least 10 bands (if not 11). This is incorrect as the snake is a significant shield that takes in some of the contours of the surface and is banded. It is around 5Ft long rather than 6Ft as recorded - very impressive shield engraving. The echidnas cannot be clearly seen in direct sunlight - water is needed to be poured across the surface. The location of this engraving site is the corner of Mona Vale Road and the Lane Cove Rd. The echidna site is the second rock platform from the intersection heading east from the intersection on the northern side of the road.

Kangaroo, Natural Bridge Track, Bantry Bay

Large Kangaroo
This large kangaroo is located just off the Natural Bridge Track in Bantry Bay not too far from a significant sacred site on the Bantry Bay Bluff Track. This engraving is located mid-way between Bantry Bay Buff Track and Ferretville Oval - the home of the Forestville Ferrets.

Bantry Bay Road, Bantry Bay

Shield
This site is accessed via a trail at the end of Bantry Bay Road, Bantry Bay near Frenchs Forest. The site is extensive and was recorded by WD Campbell in 1899. Baiame is present at this site. This might be the southern-most site at which Baiame appears in the Sydney-Hawkesbury Region.

Hunting Site, Larool Rd, Terrey Hills

Woman
A significant site exists a short walk from Larool Rd, Terrey Hills. Not far from this site is the Lyrebird Engraving Site.

Kangaroo Group, Bahai Temple Area, Ingelside

Large Kangaroo
This group is accessed via a fire trail that is opposite Wirreanda Rd on Mona Vale at Ingelsde (bottom of the hill leading to Bahai Temple). There are many rock platforms along the trail. The Kangaroo, fish and circle (amongst others) are located to the left of the trail near where it bends toward the south.

Shield Group, Wakehurst Parkway, Oxford Falls

Shield - part of larger group
This group is not far from the Kangaroo group and is also accessible from Wakehurst Parkway, south of the old Oxford Falls Primary School.

Forestville

Mundoe not recorded
This site includes some mundoes not previously recorded that point in the direction of the Baiame engraving located on 2 ridges to the east. This site is located on a rock platform that overlooks the creek in between the Cook Street Trail and the Bantry Bay engraving sites (Kangaroo site and the Whale & Koradji site).

Forestway, Terrey Hills

Remnant Engraving
Small group of weathered engravings that will soon disappear are accessible via a fire trail at the corner of Forestway and Mona Vale Roads Terrey Hills. Most have been destroyed through erosion.

Belrose, Garigal National Park
