Yep ...we are all still patiently waiting for the day when the people from world's oldest continuing culture, holding the same legal rights as a rock on a track before 1967, the traditional owners of this land, are at least acknowledged in the Constitution of Australia as part of the development of a treaty and edge closer to true reconciliation.

Yep - we are all still waiting ....

Devil's Rock, Burragurra, Boree Track, Yengo National Park

Man Group
Devil's Rock, Burragurra located in Yengo National Park is one of the most sacred engraving and ceremonial sites in south-eastern Australia. The site is accessible beyond the 4WD restriction by foot or by mountain bike. On foot it is a very challenging bush walk along a reasonably maintained fire trail - around 9 or so kilometres. The walk from the track to the top of Devil's Rock is steep and well worth it. Once at the top it is easy to see why this place is so sacred when looking toward Mt Yengo, the site where Baiame entered and left the earth. Having climbed Ayres Rock (twice in one day) and having experienced the view and story of significance I would describe the experience of standing on Devil's Rock, Burragurra as infinitely more significant. If you are looking for a deeply spiritual experience then this is the place to go. There is one Guringai Site that I would place above this one but I best not reveal it!

Spirit Being , Boree Track, Yengo National Park

Darkinjung Spirit Being
The pictured Darkingjung Spirit being is located on a small and insignificant section of rock platform that is extensively broken up with small bushes. Most would drive straight past this site if you didn't know it's exact location. There are no other spirit beings like this group in the Sydney / Hawkesbury District. They obviously have great significance for the people of the Darkinjung Nation. The interesting thing about this spirit being is that the rest of the engravings is as weathered as it ever was - no attempt seems to have been made to re-engrave it except for the eyes which someone has obviously maintained. I do recall a picture book by Percy Tresize and Dick Roughsy that had a similar spirit being illustrated in a cave painting - same stingray shaped head and piercing red/orange eyes.

Boree Track, Boree Road, Yengo National Park

Emu Track
This site was recorded as two separate sites but is probably one site anyway. Located on the right hand side of the Boree Track it has few of the originally recorded engravings being visible. Pictured is one of many emu tracks at the site.

Boree Road, Boree Track, Yengo National Park

Kangaroo amongst other engravings
This kangaroo engraving was left out of the publicly accessible records for this site. Extremely difficult to reach, particularly in summer, the walk is worthwhile yet challenging. This site, including a number of other significant engravings, is located somewhere near the corner of Boree Road and the Boree Track in Yengo National Park. Like other significant sites in the area a magnificent view of Mount Yengo is able to be had at the end of a long spur.
