An extensive rock platform runs parallel to the road from Umina to Patonga. Most of the platform is just reachable from the roadway heading north and following the Electrical Poles tracks before climbing 15 - 20 metres up a series of rock walls. At the centre of this platform is a natural watercourse and waterfall - not visible via Google Earth and quite dangerous to traverse. There are indications that this area may have accommodated many engravings however the natural run-off from the road has perhaps caused the platform to fill with sediment and allowed shallow rooted native tress/shrubs to cover the area like a carpet. A large Kangaroo tail-like engraving along with several axe grooves are still visible.
Revisiting the Aboriginal Engravings of the Sydney / Hawkesbury Districts. 14 Blacks, 6 Tigers, 3 Death Adders, 8 Brown Snakes, one unidentified grey blue snake but no pythons ..... that would be about 42 serious reptiles for more than 511 engraving platforms and a few caves - INXS of 7636 engravings, still counting and still loving it!!!
Yep ...we are all still patiently waiting for the day when the people from world's oldest continuing culture, holding the same legal rights as a rock on a track before 1967, the traditional owners of this land, are at least acknowledged in the Constitution of Australia as part of the development of a treaty and edge closer to true reconciliation.
